How to Add Lanolin to Wool

Many parents who choose to cloth diaper also use wool diaper covers, shorties or longies that are placed over diapers for extra absorbency and waterproofing, especially overnight. Lanolized wool is cool in the summer, warm in the winter and reduces the number of diaper leaks, even for heavy wetters. It does not have to be washed after every use. Rather, it is hung to dry and air out unless soiled. Every time you wash your wool diaper covers, shorties or longies, you will need to add lanolin to them in order to help them remain water repellent

Step 1

Wash your wool diaper covers, longies or shorties in cold water with specially designed wool detergent. Drain the water from the sink, and lightly press any excess water out of the clothing items.

Step 2

Fill your sink with room-temperature water. The water should feel comfortable when it hits your wrist.

Step 3

Fill your squirt bottle with hot water. Add 1/4 tsp. of lanolin to the bottle and shake vigorously until it has completely melted and dissolved in the water.

Step 4

Empty the contents of your squirt bottle into the sink with room-temperature water. Lightly swirl it around with your hand until the contents of the squirt bottle are completely mixed into the sink water.

Step 5

Place your wool garments into the sink, and let them soak for 15 minutes. Drain the water from the sink, lightly press excess water out of the wool garments, and then roll them between two towels to squeeze out any additional excess water. Hang the wool diaper covers, longies or shorties to dry before resuming normal use.
